Mefenamic acid
Indications/Uses
RA (including Still's disease), OA & pain including muscular, traumatic & dental pain, headaches, post-op & post-partum pain. Primary dysmenorrhea. Menorrhagia. Pre-menstrual syndrome.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Mild to moderate pain/RA/OA (in adult & adolescent >14 yr), dysmenorrhea, menorrhagia, premenstrual syndrome 500 mg tid.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Take immediately after meals.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Stroke (CVA), heart attack (MI), CABG, uncontrolled HTN, CHF (NYHA II-IV). Patients in whom aspirin or other NSAIDs induce symptoms of bronchospasm, allergic rhinitis or urticaria. Active ulceration or chronic inflammation of either the upper or lower GIT. Treatment of peri-op pain in the setting of CABG. Severe renal & hepatic failure; heart failure.
Special Precautions
Avoid concomitant use w/ NSAIDs including COX-2 inhibitors. Risk of CV, GI, renal, hematologic & hepatic effects; HTN; fluid retention & edema; skin reactions; false +ve reaction for urinary bile using diazo tab test. Pregnancy & lactation. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Abdominal pain, diarrhea & nausea w/ or w/o vomiting.
Drug Interactions
May interfere w/ aspirin's prophylactic treatment of CV disease. May enhance response to oral anticoagulants. Reduce efficacy of diuretics & other antihypertensives including ACE inhibitors, AIIA & β-blockers. Increased risk of GI ulceration or bleeding w/ corticosteroids; nephrotoxicity w/ cyclosporine & tacrolimus. Insulin or oral hypoglycemics. Increased plasma levels of lithium & methotrexate.
